AUSTRIA’S DEMON PROCESS WORKING FOR U.S.

October 18, 2012

No, we’re not talking about the devil, but rather the DEamMONification process for removal of ammonia in wastewater treatment plants.

Several municipalities in the U.S. have undergone extensive pilot testing, including the Alexandria Sanitation Authority (ARenew), Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD), and DC Water. In 2013, DC Water will begin constructing the largest DEMON facility in the U.S. at the Blue Plains AWWTP.

The DEMON process is a nitrification/deammonification process in which ammonia and nitrite are simultaneously converted to nitrogen gas without the use of organic carbon. Process control is based on minute variations in pH, resulting in a very simple and stable process operation.
