FAHC GREENROOF RECOGNIZED WITH VERMONT PUBLIC SPACE AWARD

It has now been six months since PC Construction completed construction of the Radiation Oncology project at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Since that time, the project has received much attention by achieving LEED Gold certification from the Green Building Certification Institute.  This is the first hospital project in Vermont to be certified at the gold level and only the second in New England to achieve this status.

Now, this project has reached another high point – the green roof associated with the hospital’s Radiation Oncology expansion has been awarded a 2010/2011 Vermont Public Space Award. The Vermont Public Space Awards recognize special exterior or interior spaces accessible to the public that have been defined or enriched by design or planning to promote positive public uses.

Originally a parking lot, the new green roof provides many benefits to the public, including:

• A vegetable garden that supplies fresh, local fruits and vegetables to the cafeteria
• Therapeutic benefits to patients
• Educational opportunities for the community
• Reduction in energy usage, the amount of stormwater entering waterways, and the urban heat island effect
• Increase in open space on campus

The entire project was a success from start to finish and is now providing such a valuable service to our community. The entire team truly put their hearts into this project and the results are outstanding.
