FLETCHER ALLEN HEALTH CARE RADIATION ONCOLOGY PROJECT ACHIEVES LEED GOLD CERTIFICATION

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building certification system that provides a framework for implementing sustainable and “green” design, construction, equipment, and maintenance solutions.

PC Construction’s recently completed construction project for Fletcher Allen Heath Care and their Radiation Oncology department, which was designed by Cannon Design, achieved 42 out of a possible 51 total points, resulting in a LEED Gold certification.

The designation awards points for sustainable site work, indoor environmental qualities, alternative transportation availability, and building operations, among many others. The most eye-catching element of the sustainable design and construction is the Green Roof, with over 62% of the total roof area covered in vegetation that will be used and consumed by staff and patients of the hospital. In total, the green roof earned the project five LEED points. Additional sustainable elements incorporated into the project included:

• Low flow faucets and showers and dual-flush water closets
• Interior and exterior lighting controls
• Energy efficient light fixtures
• Highly efficient building envelope with spray foam insulation, continuous air barrier and high performance glazing
• Heat recovery system with demand control ventilation
• 33% of all building materials came from within 500 miles of the site
• All adhesives, sealants, paints, flooring, etc. were low VOC products
• 67% of wood building materials were harvested from FSC certified forests
• Over 887 tons of on-site construction waste was diverted from the landfill
