REFLECTIONS
Posted on June 11, 2010 by Mike Sessions, Senior Vice President
I joined PC Construction Company in 1998, 12 years ago. With the date of my anniversary being this month, I took a step back to reflect on what has been a unique and gratifying journey.
What I have appreciated most about my experience is the people with whom I work, the openness and honesty of dialogue we enjoy, a culture that honors individuality, being given a great deal of autonomy, an atmosphere of uncompromising integrity, and the lack of fiefdoms. My interests also align with the company’s mission, a mission that I find hard to describe in a pithy paragraph. For me, our mission is best described as five passions.
First, we are a community of people who love to construct buildings, plants, and facilities that benefit our families, community, and the environment.
Second, we believe individuals should enjoy a more democratic autonomous work environment, know they are an important part of and play an influential role in outcomes, and share in the fruits of their labors. This is one of the reasons we are passionate about being a 100% employee-owned company.
Third, we are passionate about the health and happiness of people. This is why we believe in No Accidents–No Excuses and have a safety record that is the envy of the industry. It is also why we took a dramatic and far reaching step to overhaul our own health care program long before it was politically expedient. It is also why we are passionate about our expertise in constructing hospitals and medical facilities that provide the highest quality patient services.
Fourth, we don’t just love to work, we also love to relax and do so in a healthy environment. We have chosen to make a positive impact on the environment by constructing in an environmentally responsible manner, by building renewable energy, and by being one of the world’s premier constructors of plants that deliver clean drinking water to our communities and clean water to our waterways.
Fifth, constructors are ingenious people with a high sense of curiosity. We are always seeking to figure out how things work and for a new and better way. We promote and sustain the inherently curious nature of the people that work here by supporting the advancement of our employees’ and their family’s aspirations to pursue a quality education through assistance programs, generous scholarships, and by constructing world-class educational facilities. We also strongly believe in sharing and promoting ideas and practices that will enhance the careers of all construction professionals.
The people, culture, and these five passions have made my years at PC Construction a fulfilling and enriching experience. I expect that it will continue to be so for many more years to come.
